New Zealand began their campaign with a stutter, losing to Pakistan by five wickets and facing a must-win situation against India. However, the Black Caps were back on their feet after outplaying India in all departments. They were in a spot of bother in the semi-final against England after losing two senior batters early in their chase of 167, but discovered a new hero in Daryl Mitchell, whose unbeaten 72 took them to a third consecutive ICC event final.

Australia started off with a scratchy win against South Africa, and their chances of reaching the semis looked bleak after getting humiliated by Ashes rivals England. Aaron Finch's men, however, managed to pick themselves up from the eight-wicket loss to the Old Enemy, and have not looked back since, going on to beat strong favourites Pakistan to book their place in the final — only their second appearance at this stage in T20 World Cup history.

It's fair to say that both teams have defied the odds to reach the final. They weren't looked at as the sides to make it to the semi-finals from the Super 12 stage but here we are. Some consistent cricket, backing their strengths and awe-inspiring performances in clutch situations have got them to the final. And we are not complaining. A new champion is guaranteed for the first time since 2012.

One the perennial underdogs at cricket’s global stage, the final will mark a hat-trick of appearances for New Zealand.
